What a Luther
An interesting article about recent archeological finds which shed new light on the life of Martin Luther.
I’ve always been torn about Luther. In one sense, I admire the man for helping to break the political power of the thoroughly corrupt Catholic Church. A lone act of defiance from a single man set in motion a chain of events which eventually resulted in the Age of Enlightenment. On the other hand, his actions led even more directly to the Thirty Years War, beside which even the atrocities of the two World Wars pale by comparison. I suppose it really doesn't matter how we see him though; it seems that in the final analysis he was just an increasingly apathetic drunk with a penchant for intellectual proselytizing.
But then so am I, so I shan’t throw stones.
