Capsule Review - Warhammer Online
Greetings fellow MMO nerds!
Been playing Warhammer Online the last few days, and it looks like it might actually steal me away from Lord of the Rings Online. I recently maxed a character out on LOTRO and it was beginning to bore me.
More surprising to me, Warhammer is a PvP game, which is something I don't normally go in for. I'm not a total carebear, but I don't like gankers and griefers, which PvP tends to attract in droves. But the play in Warhammer is actually balanced in a way PvP play usually is not. Hard to explain, really... It basically succeeds at what Guild Wars tried to do, while maintaining the EverQuest-style MMO system. Mythic, the developer, also did Dark Ages of Camelot, and evidently they’ve learned their lessons well, because it avoids many of the glaring faults of that game where the Realm vs. Realm system is concerned. The Public Quest system is a stroke of genius, as well. Actual cooperative questing that doesn’t require a group and is great fun to play. You pretty much have to try it to understand how it works, but it is one of the few truly unique gameplay innovations in MMOs since the original EQ.
Of course, I must admit to a bias in this, as I’ve been a fan of the Warhammer IP for many years. It’s got a style that’s irrepressible . Blizzard based their Warcraft IP heavily on it, but where Warcraft is, in my opinion, goofy and contrived and somewhat child-like, Warhammer is dark and gritty and even a little perverse. That's not to say it’s without humor. It has humor, mostly centered around the orks and goblins. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, there is nothing remotely funny about Chaos; it’s just cruel and evil and ugly. Most people find it disturbing on a level with Lovecraft's Cthulhu works. Which, of course, just sucks me right in, being the warped individual that I am.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but I’d recommend you give it a try if you’re bored with what you’re playing now.
