Excellent article.

To quote Mr. Santayana, "those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it." The winners of the U.S. Civil War have done an excellent job of whitewashing the history of the war (if you'll pardon the pun) into a conflict over slavery and human rights. It was no such thing -- the war was started over a fundamental disagreement concerning State's rights. Only when Lincoln was desperate for money to fund the war effort (in 1863) did he approach the powerful liberal lobbyists of the northeastern abolitionist movement.

The fact that the current generation of school children do not understand the truth of the U.S. Civil War does not bode well for the future autonomy of the States. Politicians such as Obama, (and to a lesser extent McCain), are dead-set on increasing control of the Federal government over individual lives.

Always remember when you go to a voting booth that you are a citizen of your State first, and of the United States as an extension of that fact. It's called 'dual-citizenship,' and it is one of the more important yet poorly-understood strokes of genius implemented by the Founding Fathers.

Good for Oklahoma. I hope we see a lot more of this sort of behavior from State legislatures. Maybe we can turn this ship around before another "civil" war erupts.
