Oh, really? And how did he come to that conclusion? Did he have information direct from the White House concerning conditions in U.S. POW camps? Did he see this purported abuse with his own eyes? I think not.
To paraphrase that idiot who runs the Daily Kos, "Fuck him." Robin Long is nothing but a lazy, stinking coward, and should count himself lucky he'll only be sent to prison. We used to have the balls to shoot deserters as soon as they were caught. Alas, we live in the world of the "kinder, gentler" military now.
If any of the members of my squad -- and I'm sure Fundy will say exactly the same -- had deserted me on the battlefield, they wouldn't have to worry about going to the Big L, because I'd have shot them square in the back with my own sidearm. Cowards deserve no better death, and "conscientious objector" is nothing but a euphemism for "coward."
You want to be a conscientious objector, that's fine, as long as you are like the Amish, and have been against fighting always at any time ever.The difference between this war and all other by us prior, is that this one you have to volunteer for. Don't go out and join the military and then decide you feel the War (at that time) is unjust.
From reading the article and the picture of Mr. Asshat, it looks to me like this guy had it planned all along. If he was still in training school and asked out, the military has been granting Admin discharges. Oh yea, they threaten you with court martial to see if you are serious, but they have been putting people out like this since they became all volunteer. Everyone who washed out in boot camp got Admin'ed. Even in your MOS school, they still do it. If you read the article you also see that people who refuse to fight are getting less than honorable, but are still being let out with no jail time. They are probably restricted to base during the process, but big deal, hippie boy could have gotten out with no fuss. If you read it though, he was filing papers for status, so he wanted it to be known he was "fleeing" the army because he didn't believe in what we were doing anymore. I maintian he is nothing but an attention whoreing hippie.

You may be right, in which case I sincerely apologize for wanting to shoot him in the back. I'd like to offer the alternative solution of drawing and quartering.
