Age of Censorship
The Age of Conan is a new massively multiplayer online game scheduled to be released this year. Its selling point in a very crowded MMO field is that it will be extremely faithful to the books, the first movie, and especially to the old "Savage Sword" comics of years gone by, i.e. -- extremely violent and with explicit nudity. No surprise there: it's Conan, he's a barbarian.
But here's a post from a member of the development team describing what the game will be like after the various censors get through with it:
So the sexually repressed Puritans don't want to see any tits, (boobies are evil; just ask any member of the Moral Majority), while the war gods of Europe don't want to see any violence, (boobies are fine though, especially if oversized and attached to large Teutonic wimminvolk).
The rest of the world apparently understands the meaning of the word "game".

Since we’ve just gotten our ratings, and since it’s the topic of endless speculation, I can now give you the full and complete story on what you will and won’t see in each "version" of the game. Please note this isn’t a design decision or something we can reverse. It’s a legal (or as good as legal) requirement to sell the game in that particular territory.
With that said:
The US version is rated M for Mature by the ESRB. If you buy the US version, you will not see nipples.
The German version is rated 18+ by USK. The German version has full gore, but will not have decapitation, dismemberment, and over-the-top type fatalities.
The "elsewhere in Europe" version is rated 18+ by PEGI and is unchanged.

Honestly, I could care less about boobs and gore in my video games. (that's why God created Porn and Extreme videos( nothing better than watching a half wit face plant on a parking lot)). What I want to know is will it have the druken debauchery that is Conan. Can you get hookers and steal princesses and kill guards, and bar brawls and all that other fun stuff, or will it be like DAOC and WOW, and all guards are lvl 600 with a magical sword of whippin your ass, and towns are for standing around for 10 hours day, while you build skill in basket weaving.
Remember, Conan was a thief before he was a warrior. Want to make the game fun, be able to loot and steal from other players. THAT would make it interesting.
Of course the only thing this will mean is that some enterprising Brits will make a nice pile of pub money selling the enhanced Tiitties & Gore version on eBay.
