Drone Attack

The U.S. military is now so advanced, even our targets shoot back.

Suck it, Ivan Achmed.

What is the name of the weapons program creating these systems? Skynet?

I don't see how this is really a first, since an unmanned Predator launched a Hellfire missile at a carload of terrorists in Yemen sometime back in 2003 or 2004?

The article wasn't written very clearly. The gist of it is that this is the first time a HARM (High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile) has been launched from an unmanned platform. The HARM is designed for semi-autonomous strikes on SAM sites, and is very effective in that role. It is, however, a very large, heavy, complicated missile, and thus requires a full-sized launch platform -- i.e., an airplane. The QF-4s are retired Phantom fighter jets, normally used as targets in missile development and deployment testing, but have the size to deploy HARMs. Predators and the other drones currently in service would not be capable of launching a HARM.

The Wild Weasel (anti-SAM site) mission is the most dangerous role in a strike package, with a very high casualty rate. The ability to perform that mission in an unmanned aircraft would be a highly beneficial force multiplier. Some of the weasel drivers would probably grouse about it, but deep down inside they'll be just as happy to not be staring down the gun barrel. =)
