Goodbye Kitty

After many decades of honorable service, the Defender of the Fleet is heading for a well-deserved retirement. I read an article in Proceedings this month which also bid a fond farewell to the 'Cat. Yet another piece of my beloved Cold War goes by the wayside.

Who'd've ever guessed we would miss the Soviets so much? Those guys at least had class. Muslim terrorists are just... well, crass. No style. They can't even build their own planes. What kind of a crappy opponent is that? You can't even sink your budgetary teeth into such a useless enemy. As for China, their arsenal consists of cheap knock-offs of decades-old hardware, most of which they can barely maintain.

Do you think the Soviets could come out and play again? Just for a little while? We promise to have them home in time for dinner.
