Night of the Long Egos

A few months back, I wrote about the exploits of Texas' own home-grown jackbooted thugs, known as the TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission). They were going into bars, observing people drinking, then arresting them for public intoxication. Their reasoning, such as it was, revolved around the idea of "pre-empting" DUI charges--which is rather like arresting someone for jaywalking in order to prevent them from jumping off a building at some indeterminate point in the future.

The program was shut down pronto, after politicians messed their trousers when their constituents threatened a torch-and-pitchfork solution. Through a local reporter, you can now see for yourself the details of precisely how these aspiring sturmabteilung were operating.
