We're All Gonna Die! (Or Not)

Take a gander at this chart on Angry Bear's site.

Notice that MediCare and Medicaid line? Now imagine what it will look like as a precentage of GDP in a hundred years, once anti-geronic drugs have been on the market for a while. That's a can of big, fat, nasty worms we're fixin' to open in the next couple of decades. I just can't decide whether I'm jealous because I'll be too old for them to be really effective, or grateful that I'll be dead before the fecal matter hits the rotary air mover.

Anti-gerone treatments and widespread genetic manipulation will inevitably produce the nastiest wars in human history. Gene Roddenberry had that pegged way back in 1966. Humanity will be fortunate if our entire social and tribal structure doesn't completely disintegrate under the combined stresses of nanotechnology and genetic manipulation. It's going to make the threat of nuclear war under which we grew up look like a Sunday picnic in the park...

Okay, I'm sure now; I'm glad I'll be dead.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled doom and gloom.

(Hat-tip to the Mad Builder of Periwinkle)
