Is NASA Going retro?

It may very well turn out that the space shuttle was not the step forward they thought it would be. This article is about possible changes at NASA. I think it may actually be in the right direction for a change. The idea of using a rocket to get an advanced space only craft aloft sounds good. Having a separate rocket designed with maximum safety in mind as a crew delivery system sounds good as well. A vehicle that can take off from the ground, travel to space, re-enter the atmosphere and land would be nice. That’s for the R&D group to come up with and test before they try to use it for commercial payloads.

While government supervision might be required, I think turning over the commercial side to private enterprise would be good. NASA could still be the government entity for space exploration as well as the regulatory body for overseeing industry. I’m sure there are those who have nightmare visions of private enterprise in space but properly monitored I believe it would accelerate our expansion into space. The results of which would hopefully improve the quality of life for everyone. That’s my opinion on the matter anyway.

Just so. While the rough analogy I like to make is that NASA should morph into something more like the FAA, it doesn't really hold up entirely. That's because the FAA are a bunch of pompous, self-righteous, blowhard technocrats with delusions of godhood.

Not that NASA is much better mind you, but at least most them have an I.Q. above room temperature. I've had interaction with some FAA officials in the past, and I invariably came away puzzled as to how they possessed sufficient brain power to drive their involuntary motor functions.
