Lefty Jesuits

Somehow, I think St. Ignatius Loyola would have taken a considerably different stance on the subject. Not to mention entire generations of ruler-wielding nuns.

The link at the Orangeman is registered, so I'll quote the pertinent bits here:

LeMoyne College expelled Scott McConnell, a student from its Masters of Education program, for writing a paper in which he advocated the use of corporal punishment in schools, he said.

The paper, written for a class on classroom management, originally earned McConnell an A-. However, when he attempted to enroll in classes for the spring semester, he found he couldn't.

"LeMoyne doesn't believe students should be able to express their own views," McConnell said. "If you differ from our philosophical ideal you will be expelled from our college."

McConnell, who hopes to become an elementary school teacher, was informed last Tuesday that he couldn't continue at the school.

That's freedom of expression, American liberal-style. "Agree with us, or you have to leave." I would say that I'm astounded, but I'm friends with--or related to--so many teachers, it doesn't even raise an eyebrow anymore. The path our school systems are on is a dead end, and every good teacher knows it. It's become about money, not education. Standardized test scores have become a religion with school administrators, and anyone who varies from that cant will be excommunicated--as Mr. McConnell discovered.

He's better off, anyway; he wouldn't have lasted three days in public education before he was fired for belting some little punk who thoroughly deserved it. I wish I had a nickel for every time a paddle was set on an intercept course with my ass when I was a kid; I'd be retired by now. But it got the message across loud and clear: screw up, and you get your ass beat. I see kids every day who need to hear that message. Repeatedly.

Oh, well; it'll all come around. The pendulum has already started back in the other direction. In the meantime, it's great job security for me, since the public school system can no longer produce more than an insignificant handful of students who are competent in mathematics--or any other discipline, for that matter. But their standardized test scores look great, and they feel wonderful about themselves.

I just hope they're good with a shovel.

"SU's teacher preparation faculty - and, I suspect, LeMoyne's - will defend any student's right to assert any position, so long as he or she demonstrates an openness to different points of view and a commitment to and respect for every one of the children he or she teaches," Shedd said.

So let me get this straight. McConnell had a point of view but the college didn't respect it or him because it differed from there view. Does the term practice what you preach hold any meaning for this bunch of hipocrits.
