Observations

An infrequent new feature wherein I will post my random and probably acerbic musings. The inaugural quip:

The majority of people are incapable of rational analysis, relying instead on others to tell them what to think. These people constitute the easily manipulated herds which have been the tools of politicians, priests, and other varieties of bully throughout history. The fact that they do not realize this weakness exists in themselves is the very thing which makes them so pliable. They will make all the proper noises about freedom and self-determination, but when push comes to shove they always fall meekly into line and do what they are told -- even if what they are told to do makes no objective sense -- because they value their continued existence more than the right to choose for themselves. Such people are sentient only by the broadest and most generous definition of the word. They have more in common with cattle than they do with true human beings.

From my job, I have learned that many people like to think they are rational, thoughtful, reasonable human beings, but they are emotional, fearful, and care WAY too much about the opinion of others. Peer pressure is immense, and way more people want to be liked and "go along" than be thought different. It goes all the way back to cave man days. Fit in for survival.
There is a great quote from the movie "The girl with the Dragon tattoo" Said by the villain, Martin Vanger "It's hard to believe that the fear of offending can be stronger than the fear of pain, but you know what? It is." I would say it is the fear of being thought different, that drives many people.
Stanley Milgram wrote a book called "The Obedience to Authority". He had lived through WWII and had wondered, how do you get an entire nation to go along with the systematic murder of 14 million people? During the Nuremburg trials, many of the Nazis would say they were only doing their job (Sound familiar?). He created the shock test experiment, and a movie called "The Experimenter" was done about him. I recommend both. Explains that free thinkers, and logical thinkers are actually the anomaly, instead of the norm.
