Prophecy
A short story entitled "The Software are Coming! A Horror Story for Educators." It requires some preface to put it in context, as it's a bit confusing to read today.
This story was published in Starlog magazine in November of 1981. However, the story narrative is from the perspective of a teacher at the end of the 21st century. It is remarkable how close to prophecy the author came. Universities are indeed starting to fail, many of them drowning in the death spiral of debt created from excessive tenures. But the author only got part of the reasons correct. He failed to anticipate the meteoric rise of radical leftism among the faculties and its increasing alienation of the middle class who pay the universities' bills through tuition. Still, computers and remote networks really are playing a big part in it, just as he describes in the story.
Ironically, the leftist-driven agenda of the FakeFlu for the past few weeks has served as a test bed in education for exactly what the author is describing. Yet again the leftists may have shit and fallen back in it.
