Star Trek: Axanar

A group of motion picture mavericks is finally doing what I've hoped for years would happen: they're taking Star Trek back from the hacks and the union scriptwriters, and in the process giving J.J. Abrams (cursed be his name) a well-deserved swift kick to the jimmies. These people are producing a feature-length film via crowdfunding and it's working brilliantly: they've already made more than six times their initial asking budget, with no ceiling in sight.

The movie will be entitled Star Trek: Axanar. The setting is the final battle of the Four Years War between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. You may recognize the name from an original Star Trek episode. The hero of the Battle of Axanar was Captain Garth...

So why are people throwing money at this project as fast as they can get their wallets open? Simple: the producers made a 20 minute "trailer" called Prelude to Axanar to show what they could do. It's very good. This is not a garage production; it's professional sets and professional actors, all of whom you will recognize, including one of my all-time favorite Star Trek character actors.

If you're an old-school Trek fan, this is the movie you've been waiting forty years to see.

Enough of my babbling; go watch the trailer now. Then give them some more money.

The Axanar cast were in Houston a couple of weeks ago t a local Con. It's really cool how energized the actors are about this project. From what I have seen and read this really does sound like it's going to be pretty amazing. Axanar and the Star Trek Continues series are really shining examples of new paradigm ( uh oh, there's that word) of entertainment production outside of Big Media. I hope this leads to many other such projects.
