EverQuest Next
I know that some of our contributors and readers were players of the original EverQuest. I played with several of you back in '99 and 2000. If so, you'll want to go read this article at Massively. Sony have just spilled the goods on EverQuest Next, and boy are they tasty.
The big news: the entire very large virtual world is constructed of destructible, movable, and mold-able individual elements -- including under the ground. Basically, it's a high-resolution version of Minecraft overlaid with a MMORPG. They've also taken some pretty revolutionary steps towards deep-sixing many of the WoW-style themepark mechanics, such as the dreaded quest hubs. The mobs and NPCs are much more interactive and reactive, instead of just being statically-spawning practice dummies to beat up on as you race to cap. No levels or fixed classes, either; just skills.
There's a lot here to like, if they can pull it off. Verant/Sony revolutionized online gaming in '99 with the first EverQuest, and it's worth noting they recently rehired Brad McQuaid, the driving force behind EverQuest's development. Maybe they can do it again?
