Old is New
A few pages from the Ikea catalog of 1965. Looks remarkably like the 2012 Ikea catalog, doesn't it? And probably the 1988 catalog, as well.
Despite the snarky tone, that's not really a slam. If anything, it's a compliment. Ikea has found The Formula for utilitarian furniture at a great price point. Sure, you're out of luck if post-modern ain't your thing, but you can't fault the quality/cost ratio of their product. My bachelor pads saw many a piece of the stuff.
The only complaint I can level against them is their rat-in-a-maze store design. If I go in to buy a $25 end table, I don't want to spend thirty minutes winding through the gauntlet of displays showcasing every last thing they sell, all the while dodging congenital morons who think the middle of the (unnecessarily narrow) aisle is the PERFECT place to stop and strike up a conversation about the new Swedish Chef Kitchenette Display. Far from being an effective selling tool, it's the sort of experience that can all too easily land me in jail for assault and battery.
