Old School Renaissance
This one is for the old pen, paper and dice gamers in the crowd.
This article at The Escapist gaming site talks about the changes in the genre, specifically focused on D&D but relevant to the RPG hobby as a whole I think. I admit I bought the 4th Edition Collectors set when it came out (out of habit, nostalgia, grand intentions, what-have-you), but have not had occasion to play it. However in talking to another old gamer friend they pretty much said the same thing as this article about the new D&D appearing to have been way too influenced by WoW and MMORPGs. Now we know that was intentional, which is sad really. On the flip side I was happy to hear there has been bit of an "Old School Renaissance" recently; of older gamers looking to recapture the fun of the older games, and of some new gamers looking for a change and a challenge.
Anyway, enjoy the read....
On a side note, I've recently found myself starting to collect some of the great old Avalon Hill and SPI tabletop war games I remember from my youth. Thats another area of gaming I would love to see come back, but I suspect that will not be likely to happen with today's increasingly ADD society.

OK. I totally hate you guys. Because you post stuff like this I was compelled, no, FORCED to purchase a set of the books, and could I just buy the new ones? NOOOOOOO. I had to go and look for copies of the ones I had when we sat in a tiny room eating Funyuns and drinking Coke listening to my fighter get pummeled by the fifth Bugbear that conveniently showed up when I had 2 HP whilst Jar and Mad sat back with their Mages and thieves just racking up the XP. Good times.
HAH! You're welcome! :) While the new books are "pretty", for grouchy old gamers nothing beats the original. I've kept most of my sets, but eBay has been helpful in filling in stuff that went missing. Bidding on a good 1st Gen Star Frontiers boxed set today in fact.
Before you complain of how bad you had it, need I remind you that you were the guy that walked up to my badly blasted character lying on the ground and said "Wow, I can't believe you actually lived through that, you're going to have awesome scars!"
Or perhaps the time (in one of Jar's Space Opera games) when I was trying to interrogate a prisoner and you say "Aw, fuck this", pop up from behind a counter with a shotgun, roll a critical success and turn my prisoner into a meat shower as he was about to give up the goods?.
Hehe, I could go on at length, definitely good times.
