RIP John Hughes
Yes, I admit it, I was a fan of many John Hughes films back in the 80's...still am of several. There is a line from the screenplay of "FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF" that didn't make it into the final film that I think is both timely for today's political situation and provides a good picture of how many of my generation felt about the 60's.
FERRIS:
My uncle went to Canada to protest the war, right? On the Fourth of July he was down with my aunt and he got drunk and told my Dad he felt guilty he didn't fight in Viet Nam. So I said, "What's the deal, Uncle Jeff? In wartime you want to be a pacifist and in peacetime you want to be a soldier. It took you twenty years to find out you don't believe in anything?"
(snaps his fingers)
Grounded. Just like that. Two weeks.
(pause)
Be careful when you deal with old hippies. They can be real touchy.

Wow. Only 59. That's a shame; I also really enjoyed his work.
You can see why that line was cut from the script: Hollywood had rather choke on their own tongues that put that in a movie. Ferris is wrong, of course; hippies do believe in something: themselves. Which pretty well sums up how we got where we're at today.
They've taken the most powerful and respected nation in history and turned it into a pack of simpering apologists. What you see today in the Obama administration is a distillation of 50 years of moral cowardice and ethical equivocation. The reason the liberals are so enamored of Obama -- and the reason I so despise him -- is that he represents the epitome of the clueless, directionless counter-culture spawned by a generation of disaffected children.
Obama seems insipid only because he is insipid -- and the left loves it. It's what they've been striving towards all these years. The comical flailings of the Obama administration define everything about the Weakest Generation. If justice is truly served, the aging hippies will get the nationalized health care they claim to want so desperately -- just in time for it to tell them they won't be treated. I imagine a scene, not too many years from now, where a young, mixed-race medicrat is looking indifferently at an aging white hippie and explaining that it's simply not cost-effective to treat him.
The hippies may, in the cold hindsight of history, be recognized as the downfall of this country. But I and people like me will have the last laugh, because they ultimately amounted to nothing, and I can think of no better damnation.
omg, you said cowardice, insipid, despise, and clueless in the same paragraph as our President. I'm reporting you to the new Department of Honesty (DOH) for making disparaging comments about our revered, forthright, upstanding, truth telling President. Oh wait, that would be George Washington. I see now, you were commenting on our slick white lawyer president that wouldn't know or care about the truth unless telling it would help get him elected, which hasn't happened in a very long time. That's right, I can claim him as white with just as much support as those claiming he is a communist.
