Illegals and medicine
A growing issue in many states and hospitals
By default, we grant health passes to illegal aliens. Yet many illegal aliens harbor fatal diseases that American medicine fought and vanquished long ago, such as drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio, dengue, and Chagas disease.
It is mainly due to unfunded mandates like EMTALA
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) requires every ED to treat anyone who enters with an 'emergency' - including cough, headache, hangnail, cardiac arrest, herniated lumbar disc, drug addiction, alcohol overdose, gunshot wound, automobile trauma, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive infection, mental problem, or personality disorder.... Any patient coming to a hospital ED requesting 'emergency' care must be screened and treated until ready for discharge, or stabilized for transfer - whether or not insured, 'documented,' or able to pay. A woman in labor must remain to deliver her child.
The biggest issue is what it is doing to the state of our health care system.
High-technology EDs have degenerated into free medical offices. Between 1993 and 2003, 60 California hospitals closed because half their services became unpaid. Another 24 California hospitals verge on closure. Even ambulances from Mexico come to American EDs with indigents because the drivers know that EMTALA requires accepting patients who come.
One other problem that has always bothered me,
American hospitals welcome 'anchor babies.' Illegal alien women come to the hospital in labor and drop their little anchors, each of whom pulls its illegal alien mother, father, and siblings into permanent residency simply by being born within our borders.
I feel that this is one of the issues that needs to be addressed by our politicians in the coming election. One, EMTALA needs to be overturned or defined better to mean life threatening and imminent death if not treated immediately. The other is the issue of “anchor babies”. I’m sorry if you are here illegally, your child cannot be born legally. The person is committing a crime to benefit financially and socially from this action.
This is not a victimless crime. Every person who is living at or below the poverty level is affected by these criminals. The majority of them are young males and live together in small apartments, allowing them to combine finances and keep living costs down. Because of this they can take jobs for less money than what would be considered a living wage and create “jobs Americans won’t do”. Businesses look at it financially. Why pay someone more when you can get a worker who will do it for less and you can cut costs. Yes, businesses are complicit in this criminal activity and should be punished as well.
What makes this country special, and has boosted us to greatness is that we are a country of laws, and no one is immune from justice. It is part of our history, our identity. We should not change that just to be compassionate to people who are not even citizens at the expense of those who are.
