Criminalization

No good deed goes unpunished:

A 13-year-old Plainfield boy and his parents are stunned and outraged after the teen found a gun in school and turned it in to authorities, who then expelled him.

Ryan Morgan, 13, says he pocketed a pellet gun he and a friend found in their school's bathroom to keep people safe. Morgan's mother says a short time later Morgan gave the gun to the Troy Middle School assistant principal.

School board officials issued a statement Wednesday night saying due to confidentiality reasons they can't discuss the specifics of this case, but that "purposeful possession of weapons is a serious offense and deserves careful consideration by the administration and the school board."

In an obligatory stab at fairness, we may not be getting the full story. But if we are, somebody needs to expel the principal and the school board--from the human race.

Regardless of the specifics of this particular case, you can see where this is trending: the criminalization of weapons. There is a very strong movement in the popular media, which is starting to worm its way into public education, which is attempting to link handguns directly and exclusively with crime. In this case, the implication is that even touching a weapon is BADBADBAD and that only criminals (BAD people) touch weapons.

There will eventually be a strong, special interest-driven push to criminalize weapon possession. It may not be for many years, but it's coming. It'll start with handguns. Over a period of a couple decades, it'll work down to kitchen knives and knitting needles.

Think I'm a crackpot? I present Exhibit A: Great Britain.

When the Second Amendment is gone, you can write off the rest of the Bill of Rights along with it. It's the landmine that potential tyrants have to deal with before they can silence the press, "disappear" people, and marginalize the state governments. But in another few decades, they won't have to deal with it at all, as the greedy tort lawyers and social engineers are removing the obstacle.

Ignorance and greed are a lethal combination--for people and for societies.

Even worse, this wasn't even a real weapon. It was a PELLET GUN. This kid got expelled for picking up a TOY. Granted, it's a bit more dangerous toy than most, but it is a toy nonetheless. The problem was, its a toy GUN.

Guns are evil. They say so on TV all the time. I have heard several reports in the media that mentioned things like, "police found several guns inside the man's house" as if that were a crime by itself. I have news for the news people, it is NOT a crime to own a gun.

This is another symptom of the "rubber padding" mentality that is taking hold of American culture. It would be just peachy if the world was a good and happy place where bad things never happen and people never need to defend themselves, but it is not. If lawful citizens are denied the right to bear arms, then only the unlawful (criminals and cops) will be armed. It doesn't take a west coast college education to figure out that if that happens, we're all fucked.
