License to Steal

The police have themselves a Porsche:

Austrian police are testing a Porsche 911 as a traffic control car to help prevent motorists from speeding.

Because speeding tickets are all about safety. It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with revenue generation.

Really.

I mean, somebody driving 45 in a 35 is obviously an intolerable menace to society. If he's not stopped, next thing you know he'll be sitting in dedicated turn lanes without his turn signal on! Surely that justifies the purchase of a $100,000 vehicle. These heinous violations of the law must be prevented at all costs.

Speeding: the Gateway Crime.

This message has been brought to you by your local illegal tax collection agency, (some people call it the police department).

"The preventive effect is excellent. Drivers just needed to see it parked alongside the road and they slammed on the breaks."

Yeah... that's really encouraging safe driving behavior. Hmm.. let's think, what's more dangerous, going 10 mph over the speed limit (which is probably the same speed as everyone else) or slamming on your breaks without warning?
